How often as a mom do we wake up to two little feet running into our room and then all of a sudden you hear is mom, mom, mom, mom, mom I need help with this.
Mom, I can’t do that. Mom I am so hungry. Mom by brother/sister did this. You literally JUST OPENED YOUR EYES!! Does this sound familiar?
THIS WAS ME!
I know this was me in the past and has been me since my cancer diagnosis. At that moment, I have no idea how I am going to react. Still, in most cases, I am overwhelmed and annoyed that I can’t just wake up, get out of bed, brush my teeth and wake up to a loving hug from my little monster (just kidding) loving son!
That is when I have learned, that if I want to live on the offensive and not the defensive. I was going to have to start making sacrifices, not crazy ones but little ones. It began with not staying up so late, whether that be up talking to my husband about business until wee hours of the morning or binge-watching the newest Netflix show or romcom movie. It meant that I was going to have to set my alarm a little earlier than I wanted to. It translated into me spending the extra hour(s) in the morning working on myself. When my son wakes up, he is getting the offensive mommy, not the defensive mommy!
When I was working full time and had a newborn that morning wake up meant 4:30 or 5:00 AM. Every day I would wake up, take a deep breath, read a little, workout, shower, and by the time it was ready to take on the day I wasn’t so stressed! My cup was full. Now my mornings don’t’ start so early, I am more of a 5:30 -6:00 AM momma.
If you are not a morning person, this will take some time. I suggest a few books that, although I was a morning routine person, these have helped me stay on track and conquer the mornings. The first book I read was Girl Wash Your Face, and then Girl Stop Apologizing! These books truly changed who I was!
I also came to a harsh realization that I can’t be perfect. No matter how hard I work, how happy I make people, how many times I say Yes, how many times I volunteer, I was always going to need more. Saying No will not hurt people’s feelings, you can’t do everything and be everywhere as much as you think you can.
TRUST ME IT DOESN’T WORK LIKE THAT. My current read Present over Perfect is helping me learn this. I am only on page 57, and I have never been struck in the face by my real life in such an accurate way, thanks to Shauna Niequest.
We all have bad mornings, trust me, I get it! I am not saying this will fix everything, but just give it a try! I know in the mornings that I Rise Before or During the sun coming up, life is better for everyone, especially the smallest of ones in my house!
